The Jantar Mantar observatory in New Delhi is one of five built at different latitutes and longitudes by Maharaj Jai Singh. They were built large and in stone, and their positioning and scale gave new accuracy to measurements of the position of the stars and planets at precise times. Jai Singh, a great general, mathematician and scholar, and a lover of music, founded the city of Jaipur in 1728, planning its broad open streets himself.
